Two Platen Machines

The new Titan, named after the giant Gods in Greek mythology, marries the best of the German MaXX- with American Caliber technology – and remains true to Demag`s philosophy: easy to operate, quick to set up, modular to permit extension – making it a perfect match for greater latitude in molding large parts up to 40,000 kN clamping force.

With more than 300 large machines sold of the two previous series, the new Titan stands for ground-breaking engineering. The heavy-duty two-platen clamp with its wide daylight and automatic mold height adjustment shortens the time required for mold changes. Smart hydraulic drives provide positive locking, low energy consumption, and excellent plasticizing results. The time-proved and field-tested NC4 controller with the Ergocontrol operator terminal, low-friction linear-bearing guidance and non-contact ultrasonic stroke-measuring systems ensure effective operation and a high degree of precision, whatever the job.

Titan – key points at a glance

  • Economical Compact, two-platen clamp for quick mold changes through automatic mold height adjustment
  • Precise Non-contact ultrasonic stroke-measuring systems for clamp and injection units
  • Powerful High-performance twin-pump combination
  • Energy-efficient Variable-volume pump concept
  • Operator-friendly Electric interfaces for cores and ejectors close to mold
  • Ergonomical across-range NC4-controller with Ergocontrol operator terminal
  • Flexible Wide daylight to accommodate multi-cavity and large-size molds
  • Robust Reliable, virtually maintenance-free locking system
  • Modular Finely graduated clamping forces – up to five injection units per clamping force class
  • Expandable Prepared for automatic mold change system. Euromap interfaces for peripheral components
  • The clamping unit:
    Freedom through operator-friendly operation

With wide tie-bar clearances and long opening strokes for long-draw products, the powerful clamping system affords greater flexibility in installing heavy-weight molds, such as multi-cavity molds and molds with slides and core pullers. A long-travel tie-bar retraction option facilitates the installation of bulky, outsize molds. Retractable tie-bars can be arranged both on the operator side and at the rear. If tie-bar retraction is preferred at the rear of the machine, the movement cylinders of the clamp (located at the bottom on the operator side and at the top on the opposite side) can be diagonally interchanged. The retractable tie-bars can be conveniently operated by means of a separate screen page on the Ergocontrol terminal.

The Titan`s platens have been optimized by finite-element modeling (FEM) and are designed for a high degree of stiffness. The mounting hole patterns in the platens, ejector plate, robot mounting, and robot interface are in compliance with Euromap and SPI recommendations.

Easier to lock: The Titan locking system

The Titan uses Demag`s time-proved, extremely reliable split caliper locking system where the tie-bars are locked to the stationary platen and clasped in the moving platen – an uncomplicated, virtually maintenance-free solution.

    Engineering in detail:
    Freedom through new features

The injection units of the new Titan operate with screw diameters up to 185 mm as well as increased injection pressures to overcome long flow distances. Optionally, barrier screws can be provided with 25 D length for high plasticizing capacity and melt homogeneity. Ball-type non-return valves are also available for the large screw diameters.

Anything up to 75 ton are being moved by the Titan in every closing cycle – about 2,000 times a day in three-shift operation. The low maintenance Titan linear roller bearings do the job with minimal friction losses and low lubricant usage – while, at the same time, significantly accelerating the movements: the heavy platen moves easily and precise even when loaded by extremely heavy molds.

In order to be able to accurately determine travel and position data of the machine, non-contact, high-resolution, ultrasonic stroke-measuring systems are used throughout on the Titan. A high-speed data bus is provided to transmit the measured data to the machine controller, fast signal processing ensuring a high degree of control accuracy and optimal positioning of the clamping and injection units – the basis of precise machine movements.

    Sumitomo and Demag Integration Update

Sumitomo and Demag will integrate both companies in Europe by the end of 2008. The integration of Demag Plastics Group, Schwaig, into the Sumitomo Heavy Industries Group is proceeding efficiently.
